One of the biggest attractions on the island is a concrete replica of a buoy at the corner of South and Whitehead Streets that claims to be the southernmost point in the conterminous 48 states. Originally the point was only marked with a sign, which was often stolen. As a reaction to this, the city of Key West erected the now famous monument in 1983. It is brightly painted and labeled "SOUTHERNMOST POINT CONTINENTAL U.S.A." and has become one of the most visited and photographed attractions in Key West.
The paradox is that the so famous southernmost point is not the southernmost point of the continental USA since Key West is an island and therefore not a continental part, but it is part of Florida which is part of the continental United States. The true southernmost point is just west of the buoy in Truman Annex but it has no marker since it is U.S. Navy land and cannot be entered by civilian tourists. However, the other parts of Florida are waiting for you to explore them with a rental car!
