Epiphany (January 6th) – In Piraeus an orthodox priest blesses the water by throwing a cross on the sea. Young men try to retrieve it by jumping into the water and the one who returns it to the priest receives a special blessing for himself and his family. Don’t miss this ecclesiastical event in Athens.

Epidaurus Festival (June to August) – This event in Athens is a cultural festival at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the two ancient theatres at Epidaurus, the Lycabettus Theatre, the Benaki Museum and others. Athens Pride - The Athens Pride organizes its annual street festival with the aim to combat prejudice towards the gay community with the help of volunteers.

Oenorama – It is a wine exhibition with thousands of wines from all over Greece. (www.oenorama.com) March 25th celebrations (national holiday) – In memory of the start of the Greek revolution against the Ottoman Empire in 1821. A military parade takes place at this event in Athens. Athens International Sci-Fi and Fantasy Film Festival - At this Film Festival all Sci-Fi fanatics and celluloid fantasists are well served. Ochi Day “No Day” (October 28th) - It is a national holiday that commemorates the strong reply ochi (= no) of general Ioannis Metaxas to Mussolini's request for Italian troops to enter Greece at the beginning of the second World War. Parades are organised by the public schools.
April
Holy Week/Easter - Greek Orthodox Easter does not always fall on the same Sunday as the Catholic and Protestant festival. It is the most important religious festival of the year. Good Friday you can follow the Epitaph procession. Holy Saturday, known as Anastasi, the Athenians celebrate the resurrection of Christ. At midnight, the lights are extinguished, a candle is passed around the church and the congregation chant the hymn Christ is Risen. The people wish each other well and at home they enjoy the traditional mageiritsa soup. Kifissia Flower Show (April - May) - This is the most spectacular and longest-running flower show in Greece. The show gives home to over 50 different species of flowers.

Christmas in Athens - Syntagma Square in Athens welcomes Christmas with decorations, music, dance and entertainment. Celebrations kick off with the lighting of the Christmas tree.

Art Athina - This exhibition promotes and develops contemporary art in Greece. FIA World Rally Championship: Acropolis (May - June) – Is known as the Rally of Gods and starts in the town of Loutraki. (www.acropolisrally.gr)
