January

Feast of Saint Basil (January 1st) - A cake called the Vassilopita is baked for the New Year, hidden inside this cake is a lucky coin, the lucky person who picks the slice with the coin is said to have good luck and fortune for the forthcoming year.
Epithany (January 6th) – This event in Zakynthos is a gathering of the Greek people to celebrate the birth of Jesus and his baptism by John the Baptist. At Zakynthos harbour priests throw a cross into the cold sea waters and swimmers battle to retrieve it, whoever reaches it first is said to have good luck for the New Year.

June

Holy Spirit Day (June 20th) - The church of Agia Triada in Zakynthos celebrates this religious festival with a public feast.

February

Aprokries (mid February) - This is carnival time lasting over three weeks, where the children dress up in costumes and attain fancy dress parties, then on the last day of Aprokrias, they parade in the spectacular carnivals.
Kathari Deftera or Clean Monday (mid Feb) - Heralding the start of Spring, sees the Greeks enjoy good food while the children fly colourful kites, marking the end of lent.

August

Annual Carnival “Flowers of the Levant” – This event in Zakynthos is a celebration lasting two weeks culminating in a memorial service.
Feast of Saint Dionysos (August 24th) – This festival in Zakynthos is a celebration in remembrance of this patron saint who was canonised. Services are held at the church of Saint Dionysos followed by a parade of his body along the harbour accompanied by his pilgrims.
Wine Festival (end of August - early September) – In this Zakynthos festival some produced delicious wines are tasted by the public.

March

Independence Day (March 25th) - Celebrating independence for the Greeks is an historic day. It is commemorated by children parading and military marches in Saint Marks Square, paying homage to the victorious day when Greek civilisation gained independence from Turkey after a rule of 400 years.

October

Ochi day or No day (October 28th) - In Zakynthos, a parade take place through the main streets to commemorate when the Greek dictator Ioannis Metaxas refused to allow Italy’s leader Benito Mussolini to strategically occupy in key locations.

April

Easter Holy Week (early April) - This is Greece’s most important religious festival commemorating the run up to Easter (Palm Sunday, Good Friday) that includes activities, fasting and church services.
Easter Sunday - A highly religious event in the Greek calendar. On the eve of Easter Sunday, Greeks flock to the churches bearing candles, at midnight the candle lights are put out and then the service of the light begins, announcing ‘Christ has resurrected’. On returning home the fasting is terminated and the Greeks enjoy a delicious feast of either lamb or goat. Easter Sunday sees frivolity, fun and games with the children painting eggs red to symbolise Christ’s blood from the re-birth.

December

Feast of Saint Dionysos (December 17th) - To mark the death of Saint Dionysos, sees another commemoration on this day.
Christmas Eve (December 24th) - This time of year sees the excited children carol singing and playing the triangle throughout the villages in Zakynthos.

May

Feast of Agia Mavra (May 3rd) – In this festival of Zakynthos a religious service takes place in the church of this name in the island, followed by traditional dancing and a feast in the village square.
